Description
My Inflatable Heart is a collection of short stories about life and the pursuit of happiness. Told with relentless honesty and humor, these stories provide a glimpse of a bipolar man at war and peace with himself, and in a mad pursuit of the purpose that God has given him.
Many but not all of the stories tell of the author’s work with disabled kids as the director of Young Life Capernaum in Hampton Roads, Virginia. Through this work, Koehler has learned things about himself and the people that God called him to serve, as well as the “normal” people of the world.
These stories will challenge the reader to think beyond the typical boundaries of religion and spirituality. Koehler questions everything and wonders about things that are mysterious or right next to you, waiting for you to notice. He attempts to cross the divide between the world we live in and the place we call heaven.
Is it possible that the kingdom of God is at hand and we’re living in it all the time? Does God really expect us to love everyone as if we’re family? What does it mean to get out of the boat and walk on water? Are we really created in God’s own image and why does he care so much about us? Why would anyone let a quadriplegic drive a go kart?
How is it possible for God to use ordinary people to do extraordinary things? Can disabled people become God’s disciples? These questions and many more are grappled with by Koehler, aided by a heart that expands and contracts like a hot air balloon.
